Q&A with Justine Tobin

What makes you the best investment banking firm in your class?

Ninety-five percent of investment bankers in the world are male. I’m a female and I have worked long and hard to be successful in this business. I love this business. I love my clients. I love my staff. And because I’m a minority in the investment banking landscape, my firm must perform above and beyond our competition to achieve the same level of respect and success. Passion and drive, along with a bit of a chip on our shoulder, is what truly makes us the best in our class.

What makes you the best investment bank for us?

Our clients are middle market businesses, not conglomerates or massive Fortune 500 companies. Tobin & Company is a relatively small investment banking firm. We understand small business. We understand family business. And we understand that middle market businesses deserve to have the best investment banking services just as much, or even more so, than the behemoths. In my view, the middle market is the backbone of our economy, yet it's underserved by investment bankers. Small businesses deserve the best in investment banking services and that’s Tobin & Company.

What are your firm’s weaknesses?

While our focus on boutique service ensures thoughtful, personalized solutions, it limits our scalability compared to large multinational firms. However, this focus is also our forte, driving unparalleled customer satisfaction. We can also be pretty focused and intense, which some clients don’t like, so that can be viewed as a weakness.

What have been your successes and failures in this business?

We have grown very slowly compared to most businesses of our tenure. That could be regarded as a failure. At the same time, we are still here, which is really incredible for a small investment bank after nearly a quarter of a century. We have leveraged technology to make us very nimble and responsive with a small staff, so I view that as a huge success. But we are not all things to all people, which we get. There are lots of investment banks out there to choose from if we are not your cup of tea.

What are your firm’s strengths?

In-depth and extensive experience in the investment banking and securities industries, candor, honesty, tenacity, precision and a broad investment banking service set for the lower middle market. Oh, and a lot of experience with the regulators.
