Gratitude is essential to success. I try to take time every week to recognize and acknowledge the things that I am grateful for.
Present on my list of things for which I am grateful is my business, which has evolved to be a family business. While not everyone in my family is actively involved in Tobin & Company day-to-day, my husband and all three of our grown children (the middle of whom is directly employed) contribute to the firm in both large and small ways.
A family business reflects the values that the family itself holds important. Among these at TOBIN are a high standard of client service and a sense of care, not only for all the constituents of the business but also for the people that we encounter or can impact. As with any business, profitability is important, but the concept of doing the absolute best we can for our clients is foremost in our mind. Honesty, humility, kindness, respect for others, overt communication and empathy are essential values that enhance our relationships and our business.
The values that we share as a family contribute to the relationships we have with our clients. Tobin & Company generally serves middle market clients between $10 million and $75 million in revenue. Many of our clients are also family-owned, which delights us as we enhance the successes of our clients through our investment banking services.
Over the past 22 years, my family business has brought me great joy and allowed me to do what I have always wanted to do – serve clients and build and maintain strong relationships. As our firm grows and we augment our practices in business continuity and value creation, we ask ourselves the same questions that our clients ask themselves. Because of that, we better serve our clients because we understand first-hand the joys and perils of owning and operating a family business.
Gratitude is one of many positive emotions we can experience in our lives and in our businesses. It’s one I try to engage in regularly, especially since I get to be surrounded by my family in my business every day.
